Major Duties and Responsibilities

Interviews, hires, trains, assigns, supervises, evaluates, and disciplines aquatic staff. Manages the operation and maintenance of assigned facilities. Administers the annual program budget. Develops athletic and aquatic programs. Coordinates and manages special events. Serves as project manager for pool construction projects. Serves as liaison to various organizations including Safe Kids, Columbus Hurricanes, and Little League Board. Plans and implements short-term or annual goals, objectives, and strategies. Plans, organizes, and evaluates daily operations. Prepares program registration procedures. Creates and designs plans and specifications for projects or programs. Maintains communications with different user groups. Coordinates the work of various volunteer organizations. Coordinates maintenance activities for all assigned facilities. Responds to requests, complaints, and concerns from the general public. Conducts staff meetings to review progress, accomplishments, and strategies. Provides certified instruction for Lifeguard, First Aid, CPRO, AED, and other related certifications. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of the principles and practices of certified lifeguard instruction. Knowledge of the principles of athletic/aquatic facility and program management. Knowledge of aquatic mechanical systems. Skill in developing and implementing policies and procedures. Skill in problem solving and decision making. Skill in management and supervision. Skill in operating standard office equipment including work related computer applications. Skill in oral and written communication.

Minimum Educational and Training Requirements

Bachelor's Degree in Parks and Recreation, Leisure Management or Business Administration or related field is required. Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions and to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with two years of experience or service. Lifeguard Certifications, Water Safety Instructor (WSI), Certified Pool/Spa Operator (CPO), Lifeguard Training Certification (LGT), First Aid, CPR and AED for adults, children and infants are required. Valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment required.

Physical Requirements

The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and must be able to distinguish between shades of color. The work is typically performed in an office, athletic or aquatic facilities, or outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.

Retirement Plan

The Columbus Consolidated Government offers a defined benefit retirement plan to eligible employees who work in General Government and in Public Safety. Employees in the pension plan must meet both age and years of service requirements to qualify for retirement. The current vesting period is ten years, and the current pension contribution rate is 8% of your gross salary.
